What is Boudoir?

I get asked this a LOT….

“So…. what exactly IS boudoir? Do I have to get naked or wear something skimpy? I could never put myself out there like that… is it PORN?”

Whoa, whoa, whoa….. nope! If we begin at the beginning, boudoir literally translates from its French root to mean “a woman’s bedroom or private room”. Boudoir photography has traditionally captured women in an intimate setting- perhaps this is artistically partially nude, or in lingerie or undergarments. Boudoir as a genre is exploding in popularity, and when those things happen, often meanings evolve and change.

And folks, is Boudoir photography evolving! It is now a fluid genre that encompasses all personal, intimate, and even creative portraiture that instills power in the subject. Boudoir allows us to take a glimpse into the personality of a subject that might not otherwise be seen, the hidden sides of us that sometimes we forget even exist. Some women love to show this by highlighting their sexuality, or even by artfully highlighting some parts of their bodies and shape that they have been taught (either through blatant instruction, or through implied societal standards) are to be hidden, or are not beautiful because of perceived “flaws”. They might do this by wearing undergarments or lingerie, or even with partial nudity. Other women prefer to step into their own power by throwing on a hoodie and some knee socks and destroying a pizza in satin sheets! The beauty of boudoir is, that like us it is highly individual. Either showing a lot of skin, or no skin at all, subjects can choose what the experience means to them, and it all comes down to what makes someone feel empowered, beautiful, sexy, and strong.

Boudoir allows us to be vulnerable, yet powerful- secure, yet unapologetically open. It allows us to preserve, and in some cases see for the first time, the beauty that is in these aspects of our personalities and forms that the world (or even ourselves) might otherwise never get to see. Whether we decide to do a session to share with a partner or to have as a keepsake for ourselves- participating in a boudoir experience can be one of the most valuable investments we can make in ourselves, our individuality, and our growth.

So what does Boudoir mean to you? Would you don some strappy lingerie and heels to step into your power as a sexy, strong woman? Or would you show your strength in a variation of other methods…. like dancing in a bralette with your fiber optic whip like my client and good friend Abby pictured above. Regardless of what boudoir means to you, it should empower, uplift, and allow you to treasure the beautiful elements of your soul that join to make you, you.
